Football in Cambodia

Map of Cambodia

Football according to many is the world most popular sport played in almost every country and its effects cannot be over emphasized as the round leather game has transformed and shaped various communities for good and Cambodia is not an exceptional one. Things are rapidly changing and rising to standard of competition with neighboring Thailand.

To say the least, Cambodia is just at very beginning level of modern football world compare to flamboyant and most watched leagues like EPL, La Ligua, League 1 etc or comparing to its neighboring Thailand. There are ten teams or football clubs playing in top league level with only three or four trying to operate as professional football clubs. Most premier teams are base in phnom penh, capital city. There are two stadium in capital city- Olympic stadium and stad cha, what people generally refer to as old stadium. All league teams play their matches at Olympic stadium which is still under construction.

The pay is nothing to write home about, teams offer contracts to players and get kicked out anytime without players being compensated for breached of contract. Professionalism in the game is seemly a dream far from reach in Cambodia football as they are so many lugholes still uncovered.
