Nigeria To Host Argentina June 1 In Abuja
Argentina Official: We Will Beat Eagles Again
Nigeria will host Argentina in a friendly match on June 1 in Abuja, Nigerian officials announced on Wednesday.
“We can confirm this match for June 1 in Abuja,” said event organiser Devlin Hainsworth at an elaborate event at the Eko Hotel and Suites in Lagos to announce the details of the match.
“This is a time to have some of the world’s best players on Nigerian soil.”
Musa Amadu, general secretary of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF), praised the match organisers for bringing a world-class team like Argentina to the country.
“It will be a big event because the fans have been asking for such a big match since we last hosted Brazil in Abuja in 2003,” said Amadu.
Also speaking during the event, Argentina Football Association official,Heman Tofori said the South Americans were coming to Nigeria to maintain their edge over the Super Eagles.
‘We have played against Nigeria three times at the World Cup and we have beaten her three times. The players and officials want to maintain the status quo.That is why everybody has accepted to come here to play you. More importantly, we want to leave a good impression of our country when we come to Nigeria,that is why we are coming with our best team.”
In attendance at the event were former Bolton Wanderers and Blackburn Rovers coach, Sam Alardyce, NFF officials led by its president, Aminu Maigari and such former internationals as Austin Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Monday Odiaka, Tarila Okorowanta, Segun Odegbami, Sylvanus Okpalla and Waidi Akanni.
The two teams last clashed in a World Cup group game in Johannesburg, South Africa last year, with the South Americans winning 1-0.
