GREEK CLUBS EXPRESS SHOCK OVER DEATH


Condolences poured in in torrents from other football teams in Greece as the death of Xanthi defensive midfielder Olubayo Adefemi shocked the Greek football establishment on Monday.

The 26-year-old Nigerian player was killed in a traffic accident on the Egnatia motorway in the early morning hours of Monday near the city of Kavala, in northeast Greece.

Adefemi had received permission from his team to travel to his homeland for his wedding.
Olympiakos Volos FC, a Greek Super League club issued a statement expressing its condolences to the family of Adefemi Olubayo.

''United FC Olympiakos Volos, management, technical leadership and football section express its deepest condolences and sympathy to the family of Olubayo Adefemi and SKODA
Xanthi FC, the tragic and premature loss of the player in a car accident this morning."

Also Iraklis FC, the last club of Sani Kaita issued a statement on the death of the Nigerian defender thus:Iraklis FC offer deep condolences on the untimely, and tragic death of footballer of Xanthi, Olubayo Adefemi. The tragic news shocked us. A big 'shame' this is, that express our feelings for the loss of a young man and athlete.

As many as five more clubs in the Greek Super League also offered condolences on the tragic death the defender.

'Aris FC expresses its sincere condolences to the family of the player of Xanthi Olubayo Adefemi, who so unjustly passed away after a road accident on the Egnatia highway this morning.The Nigerian player lost his life at age 25 and grief is scattered throughout the Greek football community.''

Ergotelis FC,the former club of Nigerian player,Babatunde Ogunsoto also expressed grief over Olubayo's demise.

''The INTERNATIONAL UNION OF Ergotelis FC expresses sorrow and heartfelt condolences to the family of Olubayo Adefemi SKODA Xanthi FC, on the tragic death of the player this (Monday) morning."

The trio of Atromitos FC,Larissa FC and  Panionios FC also paid their condolences saying Olubayo's loss has caused grief and sorrow in Greek football."

Adefemi's jersey is still in place in the dressing room and players of Xanthi have left flowers behind the jersey.
