The Flying Eagles were stunned 4-3 by New Zealand in their last match of the Suwon International Youth Tournament on Tuesday, meaning the African champions finished second behind Uruguay at the four-nation event.
Big striker Uche Nwofor scored twice and midfielder Chidi Osuchukwu the other, but it was not enough to stop the rampaging boys from Oceania who lost their two earlier games by the odd goal against Uruguay and Korea Republic.
Officials blamed profligacy in front of goal for the defeat but added that fatigue was never far away from a team that flew to Korea Republic only the day after arriving from South Africa with the African Youth Championship trophy.
Uruguay won the competition after drawing 1-1 with hosts Korea Republic in the second match of the day at the Suwon World Cup Stadium. That saw them finish with five points, one better than the Flying Eagles who finished with four.
The African champions are expected back in the country on Thursday aboard Qatar Airways flight
